Homily: 12 May: John 16:12-15

(Please read the Scripture passage before reading the homily.)

Do not expect the Spirit to teach us anything new.  Christ is the fullness of God’s revelation and Christ and the Spirit are one with the Father.  The work of the Spirit is to give us understanding of the revelation Christ has given us.  We shall have no new doctrine, but we shall receive as needed greater understanding of doctrine.

The Spirit may give us a better understanding or enable us to apply the words of Jesus better for our own times.  The Spirit, however, is not given so that we can add to Jesus’ words.

The Spirit will receive from Jesus because what belongs to Jesus belongs also to the Father and to the Spirit.  The Father gives to the Son and the Son gives to the Spirit so that each has the fullness of the same revelation.  It is a mutual owning, a mutual sharing, a mutual receiving and a mutual revealing of the one and the same message.

The Spirit, then, will guide us into all truth.  This means that we can acknowledge Jesus as Lord in our lives, in our speech and in whatever we do.  The truth is Jesus, come in the flesh from God, come to save us all, who reveals the immense love of God for us.
