Homily: 16 December 2022: John 5:33-36

Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.

Who was John the Baptist is one of the concerns of the Scriptures, especially two weeks before Christmas.  Oday’s reading shows us John as a witness to Christ, but his testimony was not the most important testimony about Jesus.

When the Father sent Jesus into the world, the Father, in effect told Jesus what works he had to do to prove who he is.  It was as if the Father had said, cure the sick, heal people with disabilities, eat and drink with sinners, rise from the dead, preach the word, and these will give testimony as to who you are.

John did give testimony as to who Jesus was, as did all the ancient prophet, but Jesus was relying more on having what he did and said testify about him.

If we are going to make an impact on the world for Christ, it will not be from what we say and do, unless what we do and say come from the witness of our lives.  The works that we perform must testify that the Father has sent us.
