Homily: 19 September 2022: Proverbs 3:27-34

Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.

We begin a series of readings from the books of wisdom.  We will not read every word from every book of wisdom.  Over a two-year period, we shall have a good taste of the Bible’s wisdom literature.   We would hope that you read on your own passage not used in our daily readings.

Some of our passages from Proverbs date from eight centuries before Christ and some come from times closer to the New Testaments times.  Wisdom in the Bible is old and ever new.  Sometime the voice commands and sometimes it scolds.  As a parent might speak to a child, at times Proverbs speaks to us.  At times it presents the wisdom of an ancient by name, at other times it may speak in the name of all wise people.

Hear the wisdom for today.  If you can do good, do good.  Plot no evil and avoid endless arguing with others.  Do not envy those who do bad things.  God’s friends do good things.  Those who do good find blessings and God’s kindness.  God desires us, so let us do good.

The just person lives on God’s holy mountain: where do we live?
