(Please read the passage above before reading the commentary.)
We may have an account here of the finding of the first written part of the Bible. The Bible started as stories told and passed down from one generation to another. The stories were collected, edited at times, perhaps rewritten, until such time as they were assembled into the books of the Bible. WE hear how the high priest discovered the book of the Law.
The book called them back from their laxity into a new fidelity. It called them to renew the covenant God had formed with them years ago. They book spelled out for them how they could give themselves wholeheartedly to the Lord, heart and soul. The people respond fervently.
What if we were to discover a page in the Bible that we had not noticed earlier. Would the reading cause us to change our lives? Would we have the courage to make the changes God wants us to make?
Awe hear or read the Scriptures not just to find out what happened centuries ago. We also hear them or read them because they are meant for us in our time, not just for those in their times.
