Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.
The mark of the beast is 666. Each digit is one less than seven, which was considered a perfect number in ancient times. The repetition of the number indicated the superlative. The Christian symbolically number 144,000. Twelves times twelve times a thousand makes 144,000. Twelve is twice six and undoes the imperfection of six.
The Christian is also marked, but with the name of God and the Lord Jesus, for salvation, whereas those marked with beast are marked for death.
The sea in ancient times was a symbol of inconstancy, danger, and death. It was considered the most chaotic of all creation. In Revelation, the sea gives up its dead and its chaos is destroyed. In the creation of the nee heaven and the new earth, the sea is no more. It is a new order, a new heaven, a new earth and no more sea. The former heaven and earth have passed away.
The climax is next to come. The new heaven and the new earth come down out of heaven from God. They come as a bride bedecked for her husband. God is once again married to the earth.
It is a time of victory. No matter what con happen to us in this life, we need not fear because the all-powerful God and the Lamb have our backs and no torment can touch us.
