Homily: 27 January 2023: Mark 4:26-34

Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.

How is it with the Kingdom of God?  It is a process.  It includes scattering the seed, the day in day out waiting for the seed to germinate, grow, mature and be ready for harvest.  It is the whole process, just as a banquet is more than eating food and includes conversation, presentations, entertainment and celebration.

The Kingdom is also like a mustard seed, something very small that becomes very tall.  It can take over a field and become a tree that attracts birds.  Farmers may not like to have such a tree even near their fields because birds often cause problems for them,.

If the Kingdom of God grows furtively in world and shows up unexpectedly, what happens when the Kingdom of God meets the Roman authorities or the front pages of our political parties and governments?  What if the birds attracted to the mustard seed-turned-tree are the Christians living throughout the Roman Empire?  What if the birds are the outsiders to us, or if we are the outsiders to the owners of the field?

We need to hear the parables carefully, and let the Lord explain things to us.
