Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.
We want to see the Father. Philip asks the question we also want to ask. We get the same response that Philip got: if you see me, you see the Father as well.
Jesus speaks the same words that the Father speaks. When God said, “Let there be light” at the beginning of creation, the Son also spoke the words, as did also the Holy Spirit. Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in Jesus.
Do you understand this? If yes, do you also understand that Jesus has prayed that we and Jesus would be one, just as the Father and Jesus are one?
We can imagine that Philip learned the lesson. Now he would ask us to show him the Father. Can we answer as Jesus did? Should answer as Jesus did? How do our words speak God’s words and how do our words speak solely for ourselves? If we speak God’s words, we do God’s works. If we speak our own words, we work for ourselves, not for God.
It is the works we do that draw people toward Go or move them away from knowing God. Our task is the task of the first Apostles, which was also the task of Jesus. Philip wanted to see God, but so do all the peoples of the world. Philip did see the Father when he saw Jesus. The world today will see the Father if we do our jobs of speaking and acting like Jesus so that everyone else can see the Father.
