Homily 31 July 2023, Matthew 13:31-35

Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.

We spend much time waiting.  We long for summer in December and we long for winter in July.  Farmers plant seeds and wait. Women get pregnant and wait.

The kingdom of heaven is like this.  It is a mustard seed in a field.  It is yeast mixed in with many bushels of flour.

The mustard seed has a way of taking over the entire plot with its root system and squeezing out the crop by becoming a tree in size that welcomes all the birds of heaven with all their bird droppings and noise.

The yeast invades the large quantity of flour in our example, more than a hundred pounds, and makes the whole quantity more fruitful.

Such is the kingdom of God.  It works invisibly, while we are not aware of it.  It works for a long time.  It produces more crop than one would expect from one small seed or one small amount of yeast.

Such is the kingdom of God.  It has grown in us in its own subtle and powerful way.  It has taken over our lives.  It will not lie there idly; it will bear fruit.

God has called us into the kingdom.  God has made us into the kingdom.  God loves us mustard seeds, us starts of yeast, us the treasure and pearl of great price.  Let us be found.  Let us be cropped.  Let us be leavened.  Let us be fruitful.  Let us welcome the kingdom of God no matter how long it is that we have to wait.
