Homily for 21 June 2020 Twelfth Sunday Romans 5:12-15

Please read the Scripture passage before reading the homily.

My sisters and brothers,

Death is a deep mystery.  We are all going to die, but we are going to live forever.

“Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death.”  Through one man grace reentered the world, and through grace, life reentered the world.

“Thus death came to all people, inasmuch as all sinned.”  Thus life came to all people, inasmuch as all have received the grace of Christ.

One man sinned and so death entered the world.  All those who have sinned as Adam sinned will receive the death of Adam.  They share the same likeness of Adam.  Those who are like Adam are going to die like Adam.

One man did not sin, but was always obedient to God and through him, grace and life came back into the world.  Those who act the way this man did receive grace and life.

The life of Christ has destroyed the death of the first man.  The life of Christ has changed death.  Death now is the passage way to life eternal, the life without end, the life of Christ.

If through the sin of the first man death entered into the world, why cannot life enter the world through the one man Jesus Christ?  If the first man could produce death, why cannot Christ destroy this death and restore life in its place?

Or, if all people had the power to sin and accept death, why cannot those people repent and receive the life of Christ?

The power of people brought sin and death.  The power of God, it is less powerful than the power of humans?  Can humans defeat God?  Is the power of God less powerful than the power of humans?

The power of humans could introduce death into the world.  The greater power of Christ has reintroduced life without end into the world.

One man introduced transgression into the world, but the one gift of Christ has crushed all transgression.  Through the sin of one man, all people were subjected to death, but through the gift of the other man, Christ, there has overflowed over all people the abundance of the life and the grace of God.

My sisters and brothers, we all have sinned, but the grace of God through Christ calls us to repent and to receive the gift of God which destroys all sin and gives us eternal life with God and with Christ.
