Homily for 31 May 2020 Pentecost 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7,12-13

Please read the Scripture passage above first.

“No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.”  It is very simple, but it can, at times, seem complicated.  The Holy Spirit is the life of the body of Jesus, but the body of Jesus includes all those who believe in him.  Those who do not recognize the rest of the believers as the body of Christ say to them in effect, “Cursed be Jesus.”

There are many gifts, many kinds of service, many activities, but there is no more than one Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit makes us into the one body of Christ.  In this one body, however, there are many parts, many gifts, many kinds of service, and many forms of activities.  There are many parts, but there is no more than one body.  The parts exist for the whole, not for themselves.

If we are looking for the great and showy gifts, such as speaking in tongues or working miracles and if we consider ourselves more important than the whole body of Jesus: in this attitude of superiority, we are saying, Cursed be Jesus!” to the other members of his body.

We do not have Jesus if we do not have the rest of body with Jesus.  We do not have Jesus if we exclude anyone.  We have to have the rest of the body to have Christ.  We have to include everyone or we are not acting under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The hand is not the body.   The heart is not the body.  The head is not the body.  The foot, the skin, our hair are not the body.  These are only parts of the body.  We do need the parts, but, without the body, the parts are not important.  All the parts of the body are very important for the body, not for themselves.

It is the same with the body of Jesus.  There are many parts, but only one body, that of Jesus.  Each part has its function, but all contribute to the formation of the one body of Jesus.  Whatever part does not contribute to the whole body of Christ does not operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Each of us has gifts proper to each from the Holy Spirit, but it is the one Holy Spirit who gives to each special gifts for the good of the whole body and not for the glory of one of the members alone.

It is Pentecost.  There is one body of Jesus and there is one Holy Spirit.  Over the Church has appeared tongues of fire and the apostles can speak in many languages of the wonderful works of the one God.  It is Pentecost and there is the oneness of the body of Jesus under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
