Please read the Scripture passage first

Today I greet you with the words of St Paul that “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of then Holy Spirit be with you.”   I must, nevertheless, warn you.

These words end the second letter to the Corinthians.  In this letter, St Paul has to correct many mistakes that the Corinthians were making as much by what they were doing as by what they were thinking.  The Corinthians had many divisions among themselves.  They had also made many accusations against Paul.  They did many things that were contrary to their faith in Christ.

Among the Corinthians there was no peace; their love for the Father was not honored and their communion with the Holy Spirit did not exist in the communities of the Corinthians.  The Corinthians did not greet one another with a holy kiss.  They shunned each other.  They did not live in harmony, but in hatred.  Those poor Corinthians!  Their thinking was as bad as ours!

In the words of this letter, Paul was demanding a change in conduct, in actions, in actions, in attitude and in their way of thinking and acting.  He told the Corinthians, “Put your lives in order.  In place of battles, of anger, of hatred, let the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit come down upon you.

So, for ourselves, what are we supposed to do?  We need the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit.  Still among us there are hatreds, divisions, personal wars and national wars, selfishness and greed.

Democrats have to make friends with Republicans.  Republicans have to make friends with Democrats.  Those in authority over others have to treat the others with honor and honesty.  People of the United States have to show honor to those from other countries: to the Chinese, to those who speak Spanish, to the poor, to the refugee and to those in need.

It is the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.  There is only one God and this one God has three persons who live together in a union of peace, or grace and of communion.  In these three persons there is such a force and of oneness that in total harmony and peace, this one God can share with the whole of creation the richness of his love, grace and communion.

This oneness of three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, calls us to share this oneness and grace with God himself and with every human being on earth.  We have to be one with everyone else so that we can have a oneness with God in the Trinity.
