My sisters and brothers,
The letter to the Hebrews discusses the priesthood of Jesus Christ who is our high priest.
Christ offered himself once for all. He entered into the true sanctuary and has no need of offering himself for us in sacrifice again and again.
The Romans destroyed the sanctuary of the older covenant many years ago. The sanctuaries and the priesthoods of the other ancient religions have been destroyed and are no more. On the other hand, the priesthood of Jesus Christ exists forever because Christ endures forever as the high priest for us and for the whole world.
The hands of people built those ancient sanctuaries that no longer exist. The hand of God made the sanctuary in which Christ entered once for all and it will never be destroyed. Christ’s sanctuary, built by God, in eternal in the heavens.
Christ “now once for all has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice.” Now and forever Christ has destroyed our sins. We are pardoned of our sins. We do not see this destruction, but really and truly our sins have been destroyed just as those sanctuaries of old that no longer are.
Only our high priest Christ and, with him, his sanctuary and his sacrifice continue. This is a mystery. That which we do not see really and truly is. We do not see the glory of Christ, but his glory really and truly exists. We do not see the victory of Christ over sin and death, but this victory has really and truly happened. We do not see Christ in the sacraments and in the life of the Church, but really and truly he is actively at work in the sacraments and in the workings of the Church. We do not see the redemption of our sins, really and truly God has pardoned our sins once and for all.
The priesthoods and the priests of old have disappeared, and their offerings are therefore useless once for all, has destroyed our sins.
Christ entered into the eternal sanctuary with the offering of his blood once for all. We, who are priests with Christ through our baptism, have entered with Christ into the real and true sanctuary, now in mystery from our point of view, but nonetheless really and truly.
