Please read the passage before the commentary.

Words are just words.  We often say them with little thought to their meaning or effect.  Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven.”  Were these just words?  The authorities apparently did not think so.  They were thinking major affront to God and their community.  They called it blasphemy; those words mattered.

Jesus would agree that words matter.  To say that someone’s sins were forgiven meant as much as telling a person to pick up his mat and go home.  If one set were blasphemous, so should the other set be.  If to tell a person to pick up a mat and go home were powerful, so also should words of forgiveness have great power.  If one set were words of authority, then both sets should be words of authority.

The healing of the paralyzed man proved the forgiveness of his sins.  The crowd understood this and knew that they had seen something new that they had never seen before.

Words are more than just words.  We should be paying more attention to what we say with our words.  We should speak our words in such was as to give life and healing to society and those around us.  Words do matter.
