Please read the passage before the commentary.

Who is the bridegroom of Israel?  None other than the Lord God.  Is it just by chance that Mark records Jesus as speaking of the bridegroom, or is it by design?  I believe that Jesus is referring to himself as the bridegroom.  Jesus is the bridegroom and the wedding is happening.  All are invited to the wedding, and there is no lack of new wedding garments and wine for the celebration.

In Mesoamerica, among the Aztecs, only what was rooted in time was considered true.  What was new was not true unless it had strong roots in the past.  I think the same holds with us.  If it is new and cannot stand the test of time, it is false.  If it does not stand the test of time, it is like a piece of unshrunken cloth used to repair an old cloak that causes as bigger tear, or like new wine on old wineskins that spill out onto the floor.

God being the bridegroom of the people of Israel is an ancient concept.  When Jesus claims for himself the title of bridegroom, he is claiming all the history of God-as-bridegroom for himself.  The concept is true and Jesus’ use of the concept for himself is therefore also true: Jesus is the bridegroom.
