Please read the passage before the commentary.

“This is how it is with the Kingdom of God….”  It is not the sower and the harvest.  It is the whole process, which can be messy at times.  It includes the weather, the dying and the resurrection of the seed, the weeding, the ripening and the ingathering.  It is more than the mustard seed.  It is the whole process of the seed from its own ripening through the process of being sown, of germinating, of growth, of infiltrating the soil, of putting forth branches and of welcoming the birds of the sky.

The Kingdom of God is messy.  It works in us during our whole life.  It is as messy as diapers, as messy as adolescence, as messy as our movement into adulthood, and as messy as old age.  Yet God is at work in this Kingdom of God.  We can learn from the parables in the Bible about the Kingdom, we must not forget that God also is at work in each one of us, moving us into the full participation in the Kingdom of God.  God is in control of our lives.  Just as God was involved in creating us, so is God involved in our growth and fulfilment.

We may not know the how of God’s involvement just as we may not know the how of seeds and harvesting.  Not knowing the how does not deny the happening.  Our visible world is built upon the invisible.  What we cannot see girds up what we can see.  We build houses on unseen foundations.  The soul, which we do not see, gives life to the body which we can see.  What is the Kingdom of God like?  It is like you and me, and if we know ourselves, then we shall also know God’s Kingdom.  Such is the Kingdom of God.
