Please read the passage before the commentary.

The readings the Church uses for the week after the Epiphany continue the theme of the revelation or manifestation of Christ as God.  The name epiphany means manifestation.  We are, then, invited to see in the healing of a leper a revelation or a manifestation of Jesus as the Christ.

The healing is intentional:  Jesus said that he wanted to do it.  It is legal: he sent the man to the priests to have the healing certified.  He did not try to draw attention to himself: he withdrew to deserted places to pray.  He attracted people to himself so that he could teach them: the healings came after the teaching.

This is Jesus.  The wisemen came to see a Child who was God. The voice of God over the waters of baptism declared Jesus to be the Son of God to whom we should be listening.  John the Baptist announced Jesus as the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.  This is Jesus, revealed in the healing of a leper to be working like God.

God, who is mighty in power, is mostly recognized in the whisp of a whisper than in the noise and thrust of as earthquake.  This is the God who is Jesus, He is God at his birth as the angels and wisemen testify. He is God at the beginning of his public life.  He is God here, quietly teaching and healing.
