Pharaoh’s whole army with 600 first-class chariots and all the other chariots chased after the Israelites. All these chased the Israelites with their livestock and possessions. The Israelites’ escape and the Egyptians pursuit had taken on epic proportions. The ensuing battle would be the battle of the universe. God, the Lord of creation, the Lord of time and eternity, would rescue the Israelites definitively.
The Lord who led the Israelites out of Egypt is the same Lord who created the universe in six days and who saved Noah from the tremendous flood. This Lord has tremendous power and also is able to save individuals. When the Lord intervenes, we should all take note. The Lord is the God of the spectacular.
In the Christian context, this powerfully spectacular God shows up again in Jesus the Egyptians, but the powers of death to recreate the world.
The result of God’s intervention into human history is that people shall know that God is the Lord. The Egyptians learned this at the time of the Exodus. Every time that God intervenes in our lives we show know this and express our gratitude and praise for God.
