The kingdom of heaven is like a fine pearl, like a great catch of fish. The kingdom of David and Solmon was not the kingdom of heaven, but nevertheless it demanded wisdom to guide it. Salomón asked the Lord, when he had appeared to Salomón in a dream, to give him right judgment in governing and the wisdom to lead God’s people correctly. He did not ask for riches or political power, but the Lord granted Salomón wealth and wisdom.
It could be safe to say that in a certain sense, the kingdom of David and Salomón was considered by them to be the kingdom of heaven. David and Salomón ruled under the authority of God. On the other hand, God’s kingdom is much bigger than the kingdom they ruled.
Jesus Christ is the kingdom of heaven. His presence fills the heavens, and his rule extends to the very ends of the heavens. The kingdom is a treasure hidden in a field that demands the total value of the field to buy it. The kingdom of heaven is a pearl that demands the total value of all jewelry for one to have it. The kingdom of heaven is like the greatest catch of fish you can conceive, one that surpasses the Gross National Products of all the nations of the world.
We have the kingdom of David and Salomón, which God blessed, and the kingdom of heaven which the person of Christ fills. What kingdoms do we have that will be empty until Christ fills them and replaces them? We need the wisdom of Salomón to ask God to guide us in the proper governance of our resources.
Our kingdoms are not the kingdom of heaven. Our kingdoms are not treasures buried in a field, nor pearls hidden in some bazaar, nor fish to be caught. They are fake and misleading obstacles we mistake for real treasure.
The young Salomón called himself a mere youth and he wanted a heart so wise and understanding as to distinguish right from wrong. No matter our age or lack of age, we need the same heart and understanding.
