This story of Mary and Martha concludes a section of Luke’s Gospel concerning discipleship.  Jesus welcomes all into discipleship, women and men.

At the same time, he challenges the norms of society.  Jesus is with two women with no other male mentioned as present.  He also allows Mary to sit at his feet as any male disciple would do.

Jesus as also at home with the active as well as the quieter disciples.  He is at home with the one cooking the meal as well as the one engaging in conversation.  The true disciple lives together with other disciples, even those of differing backgrounds and talents.  The disciple who can do this has chosen the good part.
