Please read the passage before the commentary.
It is said that laws cannot make us love one another, but they can keep us from harming one another. Human laws have this fault, that that cannot force someone to love. The fulfilment of our lives comes not from not harming others but by loving them.
The fulfilment of God’s law comes from Jesus. He loved his own who were in the world, and he loved them to the end: he died for them. It is said that all the words of the Hebrew Bible speak of Jesus and find their fulfilment in Jesus.
Christians see that the freedom promised in the Hebrew Scriptures was not the overthrow by the Messiah of oppressive governments and bring freedom to an enslaved people. It was to by freedom from our own oppressive sins. It is the fulfilment of the Law that brings freedom.
We fulfill our destiny when we live by Jesus’ law and teach others to do the same. This is being the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.
