There is no wiggle room with Luke. You, be merciful; you, don’t judge; you, stop condemning, you; you, forgive.
Matthew portrays Jesus as a new Moses, the law giver. Laws tend to be written in the third person, he, she, a person, no one, and so forth. Luke gets right to the point: You, be merciful, and so forth.
It is easy to agree with Matthew. “Whoever does these wrong things will be punished” can exclude me because we can consider ourselves not like other people. When it is a command addressed to us, we must obey or deliberately disobey.
