Please read the passage before the commentary.
In the Acts of the Apostles, we can see the Church growing on earth. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed there Christ. The Apostles were not expecting the gospel to spread beyond Jerusalem.
Accordingly, the Church sent Peter and John to Samaria. There Peter and John prayed for the people of Samaria to receive the Holy Spirit. How has the Church increased in our day? There are baptisms, there are priests, there are we.
We ought to ask the Father to send the Advocate, the Spirit of truth. This Spirit is always with us. We know him because he has taught us and he will remain with us.
We are the Church of today. We have to welcome the Samaritans, the strangers of our day, who would like to be joined to the Church.
We know the commandments. We love the Father with the Son and the Holy Spirit. We likewise love the others and welcome them, as Peter and John welcomed the Samaritans of long ago.
The strangers whom we know speak Spanish, Haitian or other languages. They are poor, they are brown, they are those whom God loves and desires very much.
