Please read the passage before the commentary.
A trial is going on in today’s passage. Jesus needs witnesses to speak in his favor. He says he has at least two. The Spirit of truth who, proceeds from the Father and whom Jesus will send us is the first witness. The disciples are the other witnesses because they have been with Jesus from the beginning. Jesus had mentioned three witnesses earlier (John 5:31-40): John the Baptist; Jesus’ works; Jesus’ word; and the Sacred Scriptures.
We are called to be witnesses. We follow in the footsteps of the apostles because qwe are I direct line with the original apostles. Is there a cost? Yes, but we are forewarned about this. The cost is expulsion from the synagogues and death. In fact, we will be hated by all because of Jesus’ name. What shall we do about this? Since witnesses have to bear witness to the truth, we must witness no matter the cost.
Jesus has told us this so that when our hour comes, we can remember that he has told us. We are witnesses; let us do our job.
