Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension into heaven. After the resurrection, Jesús presented himself alive to the apostles whom he had chosen. Jesús promised to send the, the Holy Spirit.
The apostles were in an in-between place. They asked this were the time for restoration of the kingdom to Israel. They had questions and they wanted answers. They were promised the Holy Spirit. That had to be enough.
We live in an in-between time or place. If you are in high school, you are between being a child and an adult. If you are married, you may be between being a parent or a grandparent. The in-between times can be unsettling; we long for security and answers. Jesús promises us the Holy Spirit.
My childhood and adolescence were days of certainty. Things were either black or white. The good guys wore white hats and the bad guys black hats in the movies. After World War 2 the world began to change. Knowledge began to double and then redouble exponentially. Pope John 23 saw this and called the Second Vatican Council to help us meet the challenges the Church would face in the world.
My adulthood is different. As a priest hearing confessions, I have heard people sharing their goodness to me as they share their failures. I have learned not to blame people or reprimand them for their sins but to welcome them and learn from them their goodness. The world is not black or white, but technicolored and beautiful.
So, we live somewhat in between times. We still want answers as the apostles did, but we have the promise of the Holy Spirit and the abiding presence of Christ with us. With this power of the Spirit, we are to be Christ’s witnesses throughout the world, even to the ends of the earth.
If your in-between time bothers you, upsets you, or makes you question God and Church, you are not alone and you have the promised presence of Christ and his Spirit to be with you. You will come through it. God bless you.
Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de la Ascensión del Señor al cielo. Después de la resurrección, Jesús se presentó vivo a los apóstoles que había elegido. Jesús prometió enviarles el Espíritu Santo.
Los apóstoles estaban en un lugar intermedio. Preguntaron si este era el tiempo de la restauración del reino para Israel. Tenían preguntas y querían respuestas. Se les prometió el Espíritu Santo. Eso tenía que ser suficiente.
Vivimos en un tiempo o lugar intermedio. Si estás en la escuela secundaria, estás entre ser un niño y un adulto. Si estás casado, puede que estés entre ser padre o abuelo. Los tiempos intermedios pueden ser inquietantes; anhelamos seguridad y respuestas. Jesús nos promete el Espíritu Santo.
Mi infancia y adolescencia fueron días de certezas. Las cosas eran o negras o blancas. Los buenos llevaban sombreros blancos y los malos sombreros negros en las películas. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial el mundo comenzó a cambiar. El conocimiento comenzó a duplicarse y luego a redoblarse exponencialmente. El Papa Juan 23 vio esto y convocó el Concilio Vaticano Segundo para ayudarnos a enfrentar los desafíos que la Iglesia tendría que afrontar en el mundo.
Mi adultez es diferente. Como sacerdote que escucha confesiones, he escuchado a personas compartir conmigo su bondad al mismo tiempo que comparten sus fracasos. He aprendido a no culpar a las personas ni reprenderlas por sus pecados, sino a acogerlas y aprender de ellas su bondad. El mundo no es blanco o negro, sino tecnicolor y hermoso.
Entonces, vivimos un poco entre tiempos. Todavía queremos respuestas como las querían los apóstoles, pero tenemos la promesa del Espíritu Santo y la presencia permanente de Cristo con nosotros. Con este poder del Espíritu, debemos ser testigos de Cristo en todo el mundo, incluso hasta los confines de la tierra.
Si tu tiempo intermedio te inquieta, te perturba o te hace cuestionar a Dios y a la Iglesia, no estás solo y tienes la presencia prometida de Cristo y de su Espíritu para estar contigo. Lo superarás. Dios te bendiga.
