Please read the passage before the commentary.
There is only one God, not two or more gods. Pagans had many gods, the Israelites had one God. Christians have only one God and in this we agree with the Israelites. Christians, however, have dug more deeply into the oneness of God to find three persons or personalities in God, each completely God and sharing equally in the one nature of God.
What is this unity, this oneness, about God? Jesus tells us today’s passage that we may be one just as he and the Father are one. This is a radical oneness, that we are called to be so united with Christ and the Father as to become two natures united in one person. In a real sense we are called to be deified, made-into-God through Christ our Lord.
Our unity, our oneness, is to be as deeply one as the Father and Jesus are one. This oneness with God, is supposed to reflect our oneness with all people. We cannot have enemies if we are to be one with God. Our oneness with God means we have to celebrate our oneness with all other people these is no room for enmity and separation. The idea of nations fighting against nations, of political parties fighting against each other, of having enemies and people we do not like is foreign to the Christian’s belief in the oneness of God.
Jesus prayed for us that we be one with one another as he is with the Father. Any other unity is a false unity.
