“Who are you, Lord?” asked Saul to the voice that called to him.  It must have been a cataclysmic, catastrophic, and cosmic event that led Saul to suspect that it was the Lord God speaking to him.  It is true that some translations translate the last word as “sir”, but the original word usually is used to translate the Hebrew term for the Lord.

Saul the great persecutor, the one who had served as lookout for those who had stoned Stephen, was on his way to Damascus to continue the persecution of Christian believers.  We are not told what he was thinking, but we are told that he was focused on destroying the Jesus movement.

Crash, bang, boom, suddenly Saul was on the ground hearing a strange voice.  He was having an encounter with his God and was being told what he ought to do.  He had three days to think about this Jesus whom he was persecuting, three days of waiting and of wonder.

Ananias suddenly appeared at Saul’s door, bringing healing, bringing God’s message, bringing baptism.  After three days of waiting, the action was immediate.  Saul was baptized, regained his sight and proclaimed the gospel.

From Jerusalem to Damascus, from old life to new life, from seeking to finding, from wandering to coming home describes our journey.  Have we come to Damascus looking for our way?  Are in Damascus in answer to prayer?  In the Damascus in which we live, how is God calling us to follow and believe?  It is Jesus who is knocking down our door.
