November 12, 2025: Wisdom 6:1-11

Please read the passage before the homily.

The author addresses kings and magistrates to accuse them of misusing their authority.  I have no ready access to the seats of  the powerful on earth. I do have some say, however, with one person of great responsibility.  Him I can address.  I can also address each of you because you are reading this blog.

Each of us has some authority in this world.   Parents have responsibility and authority over their growing children.  Spouses you share responsibility over each other.  Those who are growing up in a family are learning responsibility.  Those who work with other people share responsibility over each other and the tasks each ha.  We do not exist for ourselves alone.

We live in various communities, familial, neighborhood, local, regional, national, and international.    We are not top dogs to have other people wait on us and kowtow to our every whim.  We are not slave owners.  If we have power, it is for service to others.

Wisdom for the sacred author is very practical.  It means the right way of doing things.  It is knowing how things should work and enabling things to work properly, whether it be things or human relationships.

The Lord gives each of us the talents, gifts and resources we need to complete the task the Lord has given us.  The Lord will judge us according to how we have used the gifts we have and the responsoinbi0lities we have undertaken.  We should, therefore, long for the words of God and the wisdom they contain.
