We are blind guides! We notice splinters in other people’s eyes but fail to notice the wooden beams in our own eyes. The “we” includes both me and you. We find it easy to criticize national or well-known figures, but we are guilty of the same things ourselves. There is only one difference, our faults hurt only a few people, but the more well-known a person is the more people such a person can hurt.
I have a list of thirteen categories of ways I have harmed others either really or potentially. The list is supposed to remind me to be more careful in dealing with people. Sometimes I do not think it is working, as I begin thinking of a fourteenth category to add to my list.
When we do not judge ourselves, we judge other people. We can only judge if we are completely innocent. Being innocent gives us the proper perspective for judging others because it gives us an appreciation of the power it takes to defeat temptation.
We are hypocrites. We carry wooden beams in our eyes that keep us from seeing the splinters in other people’s eyes. Lord, I want to see.
