Please read the passage before the commentary.

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believe in him may not perish but might have eternal life.”  We like this sentiment, but do we realize what it means?

There was a time in Israel’s history during the desert experience when the people grumbled against God in the hunger and poisonous snakes came among the people and many people died.  At God’s command Moses raised up a bronze serpent all gazed upon it were saved.  The serpent on the pole became the Lord Jesus on a cross.  The serpent of Genesis becomes the Lord himself. The wood of tree becomes the wood of the cross.  The serpent is crushed; the dead wood becomes alive and the one who fell to the serpent has stepped on the serpent’s head. Check out Numbers 21:4b-9.

In another aspect, the all-powerful and all-wealthy God, who is worthy of all praise and glory, emptied himself and took upon himself the nature of a slave and became obedient even unto death on a cross.  For this cause God so exalted him above all creation.

Now this is love, to have everything and yet to give it all up.  When we had nothing going for us, God gave up everything God had to give it to us.  We can have eternal life because, who alone has eternal life, gave us all of his eternal life.

Now the love God has for us must be reflected in our lives.  God has given us eternl[ life so that we can share this eternal life with others,
