Please read the passage before the commentary
Not from Jerusalem will come forth the one who is to be the ruler in Israel. The ruler does not come from Moscow or Washington. Rather it is from the insignificant town of Bethlehem. Not from Michelle Obama, nor from Melania Trump does the mother of God come, but from a teenager from an insignificant town in Galilee named Nazareth. Perhaps in our day she would come from Alpha, Ohio, 45301.
Perhaps Micah would have us prefer Jesse, the father of David to David himself. Perhaps he is preferring Bethlehem and David’s humble origins to the capital city Jerusalem with all its power. Perhaps it is preferring Abraham Lincoln to the wealthy presidents who have followed him.
This One whose origins are from of old, who has a long pedigree to his name and is the shepherd of the flock, will have the strength of the Lord, without the might of large armies. This one shall stand form with the majesty of God. This one shall be peace.
The birth of Jesus Christ is done in obscurity, without fanfare. Even the birth of his mother is done without fanfare and in a small village in Nazareth of Galilee. Even our births have had no fanfares. We believe in the One of humble origin, whose ancestors had lost whatever dignity they once had. We believe that this is our own destiny, to come from ordinary or less than ordinary places, with average or less than average work, but whose work is to proclaim the mighty works of God.
