Please read the passage before the commentary.

I am the good shepherd.  I lay down my life for the sheep.  I know my sheep and my sheep know me just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.  Somehow if two people know each other well and one of them knows another person really well, then all three know each other well.  Jesus seems to be saying this. The father and Jesus love each other perfectly; Jesus and we somehow love each other perfectly, despite the drawbacks of our limited human nature: therefore, we love the Father despite the limitations of our human nature.  Such is the power of God, God can love us perfectly and enable us to love God perfectly in return according to the best of our human nature.

I am the good shepherd.  I lay down my life for the sheep.  I am the good shepherd.  There will be only one flock and only one shepherd.  I am that shepherd.  I lay down my life for the sheep.  In our view this oneness is future; from God’s point it is present.  We live in the limits of the present with the limitless hope of the future.

I am the good shepherd. I know mine and mine know me.  I lay down my life for the sheep.  I hear this as good news for us now and as our nows become our futures.  Lets live now as we hope to love the future.  The Good Shepherd gives his life for us; let’s live!
