Please read the passage before the commentary.
How old is forever? Isaiah suggested a hundred years old for being a mere youth (Cf Isaiah 65:17-21). We could buy into that if we could be as energetic at the age of a hundred as we were at the age of sixteen.
The passage of John that you have just read puts Jesus as the source of life. With a simple sentence, Jesus sent life into the royal official’s son. With this, the man’s household came to believe in Jesus.
How quick are we to consider our money and other resources like simple sentences readily spoken in coming to the aid of one who asks of us? When we hedge on doing good to a neighbor, we put an obstacle to a person’s believing in Jesus.
Stories such as this lead people to faith in Jesus. We hear them now because this time of year is when we celebrate faith in Jesus risen from the dead and calling people to baptism. We who are baptized must bring Jesus to those who do not yet believe in him. God has sent us into the world so that others may come to believe in Jesus through us.
Jesus, who lives in eternal unending glory, continues live in our time measured by years, through us. The life-giving Jesus is active in our limited time through us. Peoples request for comfort, presence, out time, our cash, life, and the much other that we need are looking for our equivalent to, “your son will live.”
