Please read the passage before the commentary.

I am God.

We often think that it would be nice if we were God.  What if it were true that we could be God.  It is said that the Romans used to consider their deceased emperors as gods.  One such emperor is supposed to have said as he was dying, I am becoming deified, turning into a god.”  I cannot verify the exact source for the quote, but it does reflect a common belief that the human is made for enjoying divinity or being divine.  Christian tradition has named some people saints because they seem to share the holiness of God in a special way.

Psalm 82 (81), verse 6, calls the rulers and judges sons of the Most High as members of the heavenly court.  Jesus claims the title for himself as the one whom God has anointed and sent into the world.

Genesis 1, 27, teaches that God made people in God’s own image and likeness.  We can claim that Jesus did the works of God perfectly, because he was the perfect image of God.  In fact, he is God.

For us this is so, but the opponents of Jesus in this passage did not see it this way.

In baptism we are incorporated in Christ so that we can truly be called Christ, the Son of God.  Those preparing to receive baptism are waiting to be clothed on high, anointed with the water of baptism, crucified and raised from the dead with Christ.  Baptized, we must do the works of the Father so that others can see us and see in us Christ doing the works that the Father does.  After all, we are Christ, the Son of God and we ought to be doing what the Father does.
